Cynotilapia sp."lion ntekete" (formerly known as Pseudotropheus sp."dumpy" and also as Pseudotropheus sp."dwarf gold") can be found along the eastcoast of Malawi and the coast of Mozambique between Makanjila Point and Meponda. This species has multiple geographical color variations, the color drawing of the males is different in each population. They usually live at depths between 10 and 25 meters, mainly in intermediate zones from rocks to sand. This variant, which was formerly described as separate kind with the temporary name Pseudotropheus sp."dwarf gold", is found at Liwani. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 7 to 8 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 9 to 10 cm, females grow to about 7 cm. Cynotilapia sp."lion ntekete" can behave intolerant against equal species but also to other inhabitants. You can best keep this species with multiple females and a lot of hiding places in the aquarium. In the lake they feed themselves mainly with the Aufwuchs from the rocks and sandbottom however they feed themselves also with plankton. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
